Fresh EyesLeaders working in a vacuum will fail.  Entrepreneurs need “Fresh Eyes.”  If you want to succeed, this is the most important concept you must learn. I define “Fresh Eyes” as looking at a problem or a situation in a new or different way. For example: consulting others before making a decision.

7 Reasons “Fresh Eyes” are not used:

  1. Takes too much time.
  2. Do not realize there are other solutions.
  3. Afraid to ask for help.
  4. Too busy.
  5. Inexperienced.
  6. Not realizing importance of situation.
  7. Not trusting others.

My experience: When we founded our technology company, I was the only one without a technology background. As a manufacturing and consumer products CEO, I had “Fresh Eyes.”   The questions I asked and the solutions I offered helped stimulate discussions. These discussions led to new processes, happy employees, new customers, additional products and the eventual successful sale of the company.

16 Ways to benefit from “Fresh Eyes”

  1. Involve your team in decisions.
  2.  Ask others.
  3. Learn by walking around.
  4. Delegate decisions.
  5. Learn from mistakes.
  6. Use the internet and social media to learn.
  7. Ask your customers what you can do better.
  8. Hire a coach.
  9. Attend seminars, webinars and trade shows.
  10. Read books, newspapers, and blogs.
  11. Take time off.
  12. Add a new board member.
  13. Check out the competition.
  14. Ask your suppliers for new ideas.
  15. Network.
  16. Listen.

My Favorite: I have learned the most about my own organization by walking around.  You will learn something different each time you use this “Fresh Eyes” tactic.

Rules for walking around:

  1. Never take the same route.
  2. Ask questions: don’t give instructions.
  3. Keep an open mind.
  4. Observe and make mental notes.
